March’s share of History, Culture and Adventure
March is the beginning of the summer time in Belize. Whilst the annual average temperature in the country hovers around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in regards to the weather, the next three months will see temperatures increase to over 85-90 degrees.
This month is also synonymous with the public and bank holiday, once set aside for one of Belize greatest benefactors Henry Edward Victor Bliss who was the fourth Baron of Portugal. Today after attaching other national heroes to the day, the holiday is known as National Heroes and Benefactors Day, celebrated on the 9th March each year. An official ceremony is held at the lighthouse and tomb of Baron Bliss in Belize City to commemorate this day.
Belizeans also would look forward to some of the activities that are held around the country. Historically, most of the activities would be related to water sports such as the pit pan and sail boat races. A kite competition is also held for the children as the cool Caribbean breeze picks up a bit more this time of year.
. The biggest event however that surrounds this holiday is the annual La Ruta Maya canoe race. This is a grueling 4 days race that traverse the entire length of the historic Old Belize River. Many fans would flock the river side during the course of the race to see their favorite canoe and paddlers pass by. It’s a wonderful time to be in the country and experience the warmth and culture of the Belizean people within the communities in rural Belize, along the Old Belize River. If you are an enthusiast of history and culture this is a great time to be a witness to these events in March.
