April’s Traditions in Belize

The annual cross country cycling classic was held at the end of March because of the leap year, this biggest one-day sporting event in Belize is usually held in April. The Holy Saturday cross country race has become a tradition since the 1920s. This sporting extravaganza is a must see if you are in the country. Cyclists from around the region would come to challenge our local cyclist phenom to win the garland.

Belizeans would align the entire George Price highway, which is the route for the race to cheer on their favorite local cyclist. This grueling, 140-mile bicycle race jumpstarts the long Easter weekend.

As a Christian nation, most Belizeans look forward to this weekend as they become tourists in their own country. Families would make plans to travel to one of their favorite beach or river-side destinations to relax and recreate for the long weekend. Some families who could afford it would venture a little further north into destinations in Mexico along the Yucatan peninsula.

Once the race concludes in Belize City, residents then make their way to their vacation weekend destination. April is a wonderful month of the year to be in Belize. As the weather is very nice and warm, whilst the cool and relaxing Caribbean breeze gently blows across the coastline.

The beaches throughout the length of the country and on the Cayes are flocked by locals and visitors alike. The Caribbean flavor of the country is in full force as you get to experience life in tropical Belize.
