Lobster Fest 2024 – Placencia

Whilst this month marks the beginning of the second half of this year 2024, in Belize, locals as well as visitors look forward to the opening of the Lobster season. This seafood delicacy becomes available for dinner tables and restaurants around the country as they now become legal to purchase.

As the most popular marine product exported from Belize, the harvesting of lobster from our waters is put on hold for approximately six months to allow these spiny tail shell fish to reproduce. The fishing industry booms as the fishermen go out to bring in their first of many catches for the season. Fishing communities would then hold the popular lobster festival with the first catch. The shell fish with all its meat in the tail is cooked and prepared in so many, creative ways to be consumed by the party goers. Besides many other Belizean products that would be put on display at this festivity, the highlight is all about this mouthwatering and finger linking crustacean.

The Fest goes on for several days in San Pedro Ambergris Caye at the beginning of the month of July. It was just held in Caye Cauker over the weekend and this weekend coming (normally the 3rd weekend of July) the party will be on the beach in Placencia. If you’re in the country there is still time for you to enjoy this annual event. Fishing is not just an industry here for us; it’s a wonderful activity that we all enjoy. So, whilst we get to enjoy all our marine products this season let us also think of what we can do to continue in the effort to conserve and protect this very precious resource for ourselves and the generations to come.
